If you have headaches and migraines or facial, neck, back, and shoulder pain, you may suffer from TMJ disorder. Some people experience an inability to fully open and close the jaws or a clicking, popping sound when opening jaws widely. Pain can range from mild to debilitating.

TMJ disorder affects 10 million Americans. The condition is often overlooked or misdiagnosed, but Dr. Rauk can help you overcome nagging symptoms with conservative TMJ therapy.

Healthy temporomandibular joints (TMJ) allow the jaw to move forward, backward, and in circular motions. TMJ disorder occurs when these joints are thrown off balance by stress, injury, malocclusion, and other factors.

Depending on the reason for and severity of your condition, Dr. Rauk may recommend a custom mouthguard to hold your jaws in the correct position. This mouthguard or occlusal splint is often only worn while sleeping. Alternatively, Dr. Rauk might suggest treating back teeth so that they restore optimal TMJ position. Stress relief exercises and habit changes can also relieve TMJ pain. In very rare cases, surgery may be required. Dr. Rauk can refer you to a surgeon if necessary.

Located in the Aspenwood Professional Building at 600 S. St. Vrain in Estes Park, Dr. Rauk’s dental office serves patients from surrounding areas, including Pinewood, Glen Haven, and Allenspark. Give us a call today to schedule your initial visit.
